What's the Anmeldung?

Anmeldung is a German word that roughly translates to “registration” or “enrollment” in English. In Germany, it refers specifically to the process of registering one’s address with the local government authorities, known as the Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt. If you move to Germany, you are required by law to register your place of residence within a certain timeframe (usually two weeks).

Frequently Asked Questions

The Anmeldung in Germany is the first step you need to do to be able to proceed with other administrative processes such as opening a bank account, enrolling in health insurance, or applying for a residence permit. Here are some questions that might help you in the process. If others come up, contact us directly!

Anmeldung is the process of registering one’s address with the local government authorities, known as the Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt in Germany.

In Germany, everyone who moves to a new address is required by law to register their address with the local government authorities within a certain timeframe, typically within two weeks of moving. This includes both German citizens and foreigners who are living in Germany, whether on a temporary or permanent basis.

In general, it’s not possible to do the Anmeldung in Germany without a proof of residence, such as a tenancy contract or a confirmation from your landlord or housing association. This is because the Anmeldung is a way for the German government to keep track of where people are living, and it requires a verifiable address.

However, if you are temporarily staying with friends or family, or you have just arrived in Germany and haven’t yet found a permanent place to live, you may be able to provide an alternative proof of address to complete the Anmeldung process. For example, you could ask your host to provide a signed letter confirming that you are staying with them, along with a copy of their own Anmeldung registration and their ID.

No, it’s generally not possible to complete the Anmeldung in Germany without a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, also known as the confirmation of registration from your landlord or housing provider.

The Wohnungsgeberbestätigung is a legally required document that confirms your right to register your address at a particular residence, and it must be provided by the person or entity that provides you with your accommodation, such as a landlord or housing association. The confirmation includes details about the property, the names of all tenants, and the start and end dates of the rental agreement.

If you have an alternative housing option, contact us directly and we will help your particular situation.
